Self-care is important because you are essential.
You are important to people. It is a simple but powerful truth. You matter and your self-care is important.. When you don’t look after yourself, those who care about you begin to worry. They will try and do things to help but may not know what you need, especially if you are not open about what is going on.
If you aren’t fully honest with yourself, then you will not be able to ask for the help you need. We are our best measuring sticks. We know our bodies and thoughts intimately. Knowing is one thing; acknowledging when something isn’t right is another.
Admitting to yourself that you have a problem, no matter how small, is not a flaw or failing. It is caring enough about yourself to recognize when you need help with something.
Some things are simple to render, while others take time. Visible wounds can be seen, and people usually can tell what you need. It is the internal wounds that go unseen that are the concern.
We all need help in different ways at different times in our lives. I learned this the hard way years ago when I suddenly became sick. I am a strong and independent woman, like the woman who raised me, so it was hard to admit that I couldn’t complete simple tasks like opening a juice bottle, or carrying laundry, etc.
The cause of my illness isn’t important. What is important was the lesson. I quickly learned that people wanted to help but didn’t know what they could do for me. Opening a simple bottle or getting items off a grocery shelf doesn’t seem like much, but to someone who is struggling to do it, it means the world.
It took a while to get over my stubbornness to ask for help, but when I did, I discovered that it made my friends feel better because they could do something to help me. They had been worried, and helping was not only for me but for them.
Our mental health is just as important as our physical health. Knowing when you need to talk to someone is essential. Even more important is reaching out and asking for help.
There is nothing wrong with needing help. It is not a weakness. In fact, asking for help shows strength and courage. While there are many “quick fixes” out there, you need to ensure you respond to what your body needs and not just skim the surface or patch the issue.
Your body will give you clues, but it is up to you to listen to them and acknowledge them. Don’t ignore the signs. Get help and take care of yourself.
Never forget that you matter, and your self-care is important.
