Dealing With Loss of a Different Kind

Not all loss comes from the death of a loved one. Sometimes, people are dealing with a loss of a different kind.

If you have been hurt, betrayed or abused by someone you love there is a deep sense of loss. A bond, once tightly woven around hearts, broken, sometimes beyond repair. A hole is left when the person is no longer there.

It doesn’t matter if it is a spouse, a friend, a parent or a child, the loss hurts. Each situation bears pain, which hurts. The sense of loss differs but it is no less painful. Painful, because we loved the person who is absent from our life.

Sometimes, it is not them leaving us but it is us who must withdraw. We are the ones having to do the leaving for our own safety and mental health. Events can be traumatic for all parties involved. It is the hardest step we take as we are walking away from someone we love but walk away we must. We must walk towards safety, away from violence and anger.

For some, there can be thoughts of failure. Anyone who has lived in an unstable environment has tried to help the other person. Unfortunately, if the person is not ready or willing to change there is nothing you can do. It does not stop us from feeling as if we have failed. The truth is we have not failed, unfortunately the feeling lingers still.

Our pain is no less than when a person we love dies but there is a difference. The difference is that there is hope. Hope for a reunion, or a healing of some kind. It may take years but while you and they are alive there is always a chance of reconciliation.

Hope is also born from faith. Faith in knowing that we will all be united again when we leave this plane and return home. When that time comes there will be no pain, no anger, only love.

If you are struggling due to a separation, know that you are not alone. It doesn’t matter if it is due to issues related to addiction, abusive situations or something else, others are going through the same thing; each of us dealing with a loss of a different kind.
