We buy online,
we clean, wrap and bake;
with careful splendour
we decorate.
We send cards
of good wishes
and bring out the
good dishes.
We chat on zoom,
and also on Skype;
a few seasonal emails
and posts we do type.
We remember the past,
and days of our youth;
hot chocolate and cookies
for our sweet tooth.
Though this year is different,
not as joyous a task;
we must smile with our eyes
with our mouths under mask.
Not as many can come,
if any at all;
missing our loved ones,
tears escape and do fall.
The lights went up early,
as did the trees;
to squeeze out as much joy,
while we fight this disease.
The carols are joyful,
Christmas movies galore;
perhaps even a Christmas star
only seen once before.
Perhaps it’s a sign
of the one we remember;
the reason we celebrate
each and every December.
We must not forget,
whether near or apart;
to not just ready the house
but to ready our heart.
