Too often today people are looking down, focused only on their phones, their tablets, rushing to the next meeting or class. We miss all the joys of spending time with the people around us when we are looking down. I have seen two people sitting a table texting each other rather than looking at, and talking with each other. It amazes me, as there is such a beauty that people share when they interact together with each other, when you see their eyes, their smile. Facial expressions say so much that cannot be conveyed in an emoji. I too have found myself head down in my phone, sending messages to someone who is in the same room, using emojis to express an emotion.
Several years ago I was sick and had difficulty walking, I was always looking down because I needed to in order not to trip and fall. There were times when someone later in the day would mention something they had seen while walking the same path that I had, however I missed it because I was looking down. There were times people would say ‘look at that’ and I would stop and look up, always glad I did. I physically had to stop to look as I would trip or lose my balance if I tried to walk and look up at the same time. Fortunately those days are gone, but the act of looking up has stayed with me.
There is beauty to be seen when you look up. Lift your head, see the stars, the sunset, the sunrise, the beauty of a tree from underneath, the people around you. Life is beautiful, look up and see for yourself.
