Time to Reflect

We all need a few moments to reflect. Whether it be about life in general, our current journey, what we are hoping for, what we’ve lost, reflection is our way of looking back and seeing with a clearer mind what has occurred.

The other day I went for a bike ride and stopped on a bridge to look at the scenery. On one side there was a river that wound round the bend with a few houses on the banks … on the other side a small pool. While I stood there reflecting on how far I’ve come in my journey, a couple strode and walked to the edge to see what I was looking at. They couldn’t see anything special and asked if I had seen something that made me stop. My answer was simple, I said, ‘no not really, just taking a few moments to reflect’. I am sure they thought I was crazy, but if they knew my journey they’d understand.

Not that long ago I had doctors telling me I’d be in a wheelchair, but there I was staring at my reflection, thinking about how sick I was and how far I’ve come. It took some hard work and there were many weary and some tears days. I thought as I looked at myself ‘yet here I am – standing on a bridge after riding a bike for an hour’. I was thinking about how lucky I am. My life is not perfect, there are heartbreaking issues in my family, yet I am blessed and my reflection reminds me of that.

Sometimes reflection is a way for us to accept what was lost and say goodbye, in our way, in our own time. At the bridge I bid my sickness farewell. I decided there is nothing I can’t do if I truly wanted it and put in the effort, and I counted all my blessings. A simple bike ride turned into a time of reflection and healing. I wasn’t there long but I was there long enough.

It is not about what is wrong in our life but how we are blessed that we should reflect on. We all have challenges and problems and yet there are blessings if we take a few moments to reflect.

Each and everyone of us can use a few minutes of time to reflect.
