Ready Your House

The time of coming is near. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. Ready your houses.

December is the season of Christmas. The stores are full of everything to help you get ready. There are cards to be written, gifts to be wrapped, and songs to be sung. For many, there is an abundance of food to be enjoyed.

But what does it mean to clean our houses? How do we prepare for the big day? Everyone bakes and cleans. Many spend quite a long time getting the house ready, decorating hallways, walls, tables and trees. Stringing lights to shine and greet those who walk by. I often wonder how many of us spend enough time preparing our house. In the past I did not spend as much time as I should have. While I am getting better, I always have room for improvement.

To get your house ready is not to clean, set tables and cook. It is to pray, reflect, repent and make ready a place at your table for He who is coming. You are the house that needs to be prepared. Yours is the soul that needs time with God. With all the hustle and bustle, we can’t just try to find time to spend in quiet reflection and prayer, we must do it.

Looking inward, we must sweep out the old, rotten behaviours that do not serve Him. We cannot do this if we don’t spend time in quiet reflection and look within. Have we spoken ill of somebody, or perhaps walked by someone struggling who could have used our help? Did we close our ears to one who is lonely and only wants to talk to someone, or have someone see them? Have we put ourselves down, lost patience with others or ourself? What about sin? Have we lied, cheated, abused, or ignored that gentle tugging to stay on track, and strayed into the shadows instead? Only we can answer these questions, and each one answers differently.

Once we look, we can see the dye that stains our soul. We can see the extra garbage we carry around. It is when we look with eyes wide open we see. When we see, then we can clean and purge.

This is the season. Now is the time. Ready your house and prepare the way.
